Rumi Grill & Cafe marries the tradition and flavour of an authentic Old World grill and
tea-house with the pace and budget of today's Montrealer. For seven years, we've cultivated
our sense of taste and love of hospitality at our award winning Rumi Restaurant: our new Rumi
Grill breathes that living spirit into fast-food.
Best spot to contemplate: Rumi Grill. The Sufi mystic and love poet Rumi now
has a second dining spot named for him. Rumi Grill, offshoot of Outremont's
popular restaurant, would make the philosopher proud. Ingredients are
promoted for their spiritual and healthful properties, but what's good for
you never tasted so good.
Homemade drinks like ginger-lemongrass warm you from the inside out, the
coconut-tinged dahl similarly revs the body and palate.
I particularly enjoyed the expertly smoky baba ghanoush punctuated with
tangy pomegranate seeds. The brochettes of marinated chicken, lamb and beef
are beautifully tender, served with a variety of sauces for your dipping
pleasure. I saw many patrons lingering over pots of tea, poring over maps,
discussing plans for the future and, dare I say, just ruminating. (MH)..

On

I am a big fan of the
original Rumi restaurant in the Mile End but when I took a look at the
menu of Rumi Grill & Café newly installed smack dab in the middle of
St-Laurent all I could think was "Petit Alep". Much like Alep's Syrian
food is served in a simpler and trendier manner at its junior
counterpart, Rumi Grill & Café seems like a fast food version of Rumi
restaurant's fare...

The Rumi Grill Restaurant in Montreal is a local favorite of Middle
Eastern food devotees. The comfortable establishment offers a welcoming
location for dining and chatting. The hardwood charcoal grill warms the
place and provides a sweet, smoky aroma.
Tender grilled spicy meat can be purchased by the half kilo - enough for
two or three while the vegetarian dishes such as labneh (yoghurt topped
with olive oil and spices) and falafel are a real value starting at $4.50
each...

The fare is simple, but expertly made. Almost everything
is made to order on the mangal, a traditional Middle
Eastern grill filled with glowing coals and consistently
fanned to keep it hot. Your choices for mains consist
mostly of grilled, skewered meats (a.k.a brochettes)
either wrapped in a pita for increased durability or
served on a plate with a variety of pickled vegetables and

Rumi Grill and Café on St. Laurent Blvd. continues the Sufi influence of

Rumi Grill is an offshoot of the popular Outremont Rumi Restaurant, named
for the Sufi poet and mystic. The Silk Route wanders through the menu, in
spirit as well as fare. Just in case you thought nutraceuticals were a new
phenomenon, Rumi Grill (according to its website) takes its patrons to a
land in which ingredients are recognized for their inherent spirit - and
health-boosting properties. Call Rumi's food prophetic medicine,
antioxidants, whatever, it's pretty tasty.
There's an at-home feeling to the space. Basic furniture, arty photos, good
lighting ("things sparkle in it," my mate said). One couple bent heads over
a map, planning an adventure; solo diners read books, people waited in
chairs for take-out in front of a huge blue mosaic. The staff bustled about,
bringing an order outside to a dog walker, pouring tea behind the counter so
it frothed...
Rumi Grill brings the ancient tastes and flavours of their
upscale Outremont restaurant to the pedestrian crowds of
boulevard Saint-Laurent.
Specialties of the Silk Route
Opened in June 2008, Rumi Grill was intended to be the casual version
of the award-winning Rumi Restaurant in Outremont. By offering the
same traditional dishes and full service, however, the only resulting
express element is the price. The menu consists of the culinary
specialties of the ancient Silk Route - today’s Middle East and
Southwest Asia. Start by sampling a homemade ginger juice and some
appetizers. A basket of fresh, organic pita goes well with the mezes:
baba eggplant, hummus, or labneh and zataar. The well-spiced portion
of dhal red lentil soup is a warm delight....

Rumi Grill’s Middle Eastern fast food is a spicy delight
Inspired by the 13th century
Sufi poet of the same name, Rumi opened in Outremont in 2001, a cozy spot
offering “Silk Road Cuisine” and tasty homemade drinks to diners. It’s since
become a neighbourhood favourite for many, and its popularity has led the
owners to open up a new place, not far from the original’s Hutchison and
Fairmount location, but this one with more of a casual, “healthy fast food”
vibe, with both tables and a take-out counter.
Mains consist of grilled, skewered meats, either served wrapped in a pita or
on a plate. (You can also order by the 1/2 kilo, which makes for a meal
that’ll feed two easily.) We gave the mixed 1/2 kilo ($24) a whirl and were
pretty delighted with the results. Served with pickled vegetables and three
sauces on the side (Aleppo pepper, which was delicious, spicy Serrano, which
could have been spicier, and an addictive alioli), we got a sample of each
of the grill’s meat selections, though none of the seafood offerings like
salmon or shrimp... >> complete
review of the Mirror
When you walk into Rumi Grill & Café, the first thing you notice is the
wonderful smell of grilling meat wafting in the air. Not that overwhelming,
smoky smell, but the kind announcing that something good is cooking in the
kitchen and you've come to the right place. The second is the warm
environment: beautiful wall rugs, framed images of lands that seem so far
away and all-wood tables give this small space a sense of the exotic....
